The importance of true connection through tumultuous times

Isn’t it ironic, that the technology that is said to connect us to a web of resources, claiming that we have never before been more “connected” is in fact the very tool that disconnects us – from ourselves, from each other and from nature. This I believe is the most common cause of depression and dis-ease in today’s technology laden world. We have never been more disconnected from each other, physically. There are many examples in circulation about how we are glued to our smartphone screens rather than actually speaking to each other. And I don’t deny the fact that absolutely, technology is an amazing tool for bringing us closer on a global scale and sharing information, but we have to bring a balance into how we use it. Like our subconscious, we need to be mindful of how much we are sucked into it or it will control our lives.
When was the last time you truly looked into someone’s eyes and asked them how they really are… and listened for the answer? When was the last time you went for a walk or a run without your phone or earphones and just listened to the sounds of nature? As John O’Donohoe says in his book, “Eternal Echoes”: “Every human heart is full of longing. You long to be happy, to live a meaningful and honest life, to find love and to be able to open your heart to someone; you long to discover who you are and to learn how to heal your own suffering and become free and compassionate… In the world of Celtic spirituality, people and things were never placed in bleak isolation from each other. Everything was connected and there was a sense of the fluent flow of presences in and out of each other. The physical world was experienced as the shoreline of an invisible world which flowed underneath it and whose music reverberated upwards…. The Celtic universe was the homeland of the inspirational and the unexpected. This means that the interim region between one persona and another, between the person and nature, was not empty. ” Over the past few days, I chose to disconnect from technology, driving, shopping and everything that distracts me from being with myself, so I could reconnect with myself and assess what I need to change in my life to move out of the constant sense of being in survival mode. I went on retreat in my own home. I disconnected from everything, except a wonderful web of friends who I asked to hold me in their thoughts and who sent wonderful messages of support that brought tears streaming. It felt like a golden web of light reaching around me to hold me in my processing. I felt that fluent flow of precious presence.
We are never alone. It is so important to remember that even though we, as a society, have never been more disconnected from each other physically, by reaching out and asking for help, from a distance, someone’s good thoughts and well wishes creates a force field of connection around you. I feel such a deep sense of gratitude to all those who held and supported me through this transition.
And with this invisible web of support, although I consciously knew it was there, I also felt very held by the Unseen Ones – the loved ones who have passed, the Angels, Guides, Spirit. Let us also remember that beyond our network of physical friends, awaits another realm of benevolent presence, just waiting for us to ask.
I ended up writing my own birth ceremony, having been literally disconnected from all technology, including the electricity that went out for a few hours, coaxing me to go even deeper in my connection with myself and Spirit. It was a truly comforting experience. I now feel as if I have been actually reborn and anticipate the arrival of 2017 with joy and excitement for what is to come.
Let’s choose to use technology as it was intended – a tool to make connections without being controlled and disconnected from life.
May 2017 be a year of meaningful and joyful reconnection for everyone – reconnection to your own heart, reconnection to each other, reconnection with Spirit and reconnection to the earth beneath our feet.
I leave you with a poem from John O’Donohoe, “May the Light of your soul guide you” and wish you all a beautiful, magical New Year of true connection. Love, TreacyMay the light of your soul guide you.
May the light of your soul bless the work
You do with the secret love and warmth of your heart.
May you see in what you do the beauty of your own soul.
May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light and renewal to those
Who work with you and to those who see and receive your work.
May your work never weary you.
May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement.
May you be present in what you do.
May you never become lost in the bland absences.
May the day never burden you.
May dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with dreams,
Possibilities and promises.
May evening find you gracious and fulfilled.
May you go into the night blessed, sheltered and protected.
May your soul calm, console and renew you.
